New Board of Directors installed at AGM, April 25th, 2012

Alice Bieser with Muriel Spencer, President and Donna Sweeney, President Elect.
Our AGM was held on Wednesday April 25th at the Bayview Wildwood Inn on Sparrow Lake. Alice Bieser introduced the slate of officers for the 2012-2013 year. Alice used the theme of fire and flame and Donna Sweeney, President Elect lit the main candle. Each of the other newly elected executive was then introduced and lit their candle from Donna’s. Alice’s theme and words made everyone think about their responsibility to the club and to each other to do their very best in the coming year.

Directors Louise Wood, Helena Sutherland, Elaine Knowlson. (absent Daphne Mainprize)

In 1999, Past International President, Helen Macdonald, after consultation with Quota International, decided to pursue the idea of starting a Quota Club for retired ladies. Helen was certain that there were ladies interested in the aims and objectives of Quota but who no longer wanted the hard work of fund raising. There are many needs in the community for volunteers to help both the regular Quota club and also other worthwhile community organizations with their projects. As a result, Helen, along with other Quota club members, advertised a meeting for ladies who would be interested in joining this kind of a club. Meetings were held during the spring and summer with a Charter party held on November 7, 1999 and Quota International of Mariposa-Silver “Q” became a reality. The Charter Party was held at Hawkridge Golf Club with seventeen members. Helena McCombs was elected the Charter President. Our 11th anniversary party was held at 16 Front street restaurant in Orillia.

Quota International of Mariposa ‘Silver Q’ meets twice a month, the second and fourth Wednesdays. We meet at 10:30 am in the Vimy Lounge of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 34 in Orillia for a half hour of networking before the 11am meeting. The meeting held on the second Wednesday of the month is a business meeting while the meeting held on the fourth Wednesday each month is a social meeting. We welcome new members 55 years old and over to join us. We share our time in service and fellowship enjoying educational and entertaining speakers and outings
The club just celebrated its eleventh anniversary. There are now twenty-six active members, all of whom serve on one of the club committees and there are still two charter members in the club. The club committees reflect the objectives of Quota. The hearing and speech committee collects used hearing aids to be reconditioned and distributed in the third world. We also collect Campbell Soup Labels to support a District 18 Hearing and Speech Project. World service collects spare coins to support an International Club-to-Club project. Community service organizes volunteers to help other community charities with tagging, ticket selling and the like as well as assist the Quota club pack lunches for their annual fund raiser: We have sent packages to one of the women soldiers serving in Afghanistan on several occasions and acted as interviewees for the OPP cadets. Then of course, we also have social events and speakers because everyone has to have some fun. Our local paper is very generous in printing an occasional submission reporting one of our more interesting activities.
Mariposa ‘Silver Q’ has celebrated eleven years as a club.
