Club members listen to stories of a recent trip to China
At our meeting on February 22/12, we were treated to a talk by Lucy Stewart about her recent trip to China in the company of her sister Diane. Lucy's trip to China was high on her "bucket list" and now she can cross that one off and start planning a trip to Alaska and one to Russia. That should keep her busy for awhile.
Lucy and Di enjoyed a 21 day excursion that took them to many of the highlights in the coastal area of China as well as a four day cruise on the Yangtze river. They found that places like the Great Wall and the ancient city of Xian with the terra cotta warriors lived up to their expectations and more. Our members found the talk fascinating and spent time admiring the pictures and diary that Lucy brought for us to see.
A very interesting talk for everyone. Thanks Lucy.
After-School Club provides activities for at-risk children
Kelly Smith from the Orillia Public Library spoke to us at our recent meeting about the Orillia Boys and Girls club. The local club is under the umbrella of the Boys and Girls Club of North Simcoe based in Midland. It was an inspiring talk that told us about how they began an after-school club at St. Paul's church in 2006 and when the library took up its temporary location on Gill St and Highway 12, they joined the Boys and Girls Clubs. This location is close to two Orillia elementary schools and so is ideally situated. At first the program ran at the library, but when it outgrew the space there, they were given space in the Brian Orser arena by the City. The children are met at the schools and walked to the arena where they have a snack, and are offered many activities, special guests and even homework help. The program has expanded to include PA days, Christmas and March break programs and summer camps.
It is hoped that they will be able to expand the program to the north ward of Orillia as well. One of the most important things to remember is that this program is very reasonable and within the financial reach of everyone because there are "scholarships" available for those unable to pay.
It was an inspiration to learn that there is a program available for children at risk and a program worthy of support by the community.
Club members tour of new facility for Lakehead University
On Wednesday, our Silver "Q" club gathered at the new Lakehead University building in order to be taken on a tour of the facility. It was very informative to us as the enrollment is increasing in leaps and bounds and the plans are in place for the expansion over the next few years. At this time a dormitory and cafeteria are in the process of being constructed, due to be ready for the next academic year. The University is very proud of the fact that it has been designated an L.E.E.D platinum building for a very high conformance to ecological and environmental design. It has a "Green" roof and requires only the minimum use of Hydro and external water to be fully operational. We then went on a tour in order to view the many student facilities in the way of classrooms, computer availability, library, study areas etc. Following the tour, we enjoyed an excellent lunch at the facility. We were all impressed by how quickly Lakehead University has become a part of our Community and by all the plans that they have in place for the future
Benefits of Shiatsu
The Fall season has begun and at our meeting on Wednesday, October 27th, the speaker was Darlene Corkett, the Director of the Waldencroft Shiatsu Clinic in Craighurst, which specializes in Shiatsu, acupuncture and low intensity laser treatments. Darlene's talk was very well received by all the members. She stressed that regular exercise and light weight training is essential to our continued health and well-being, especially as we age. Darlene teaches three exercise classes (of 35 each) to women from the ages of 65 to 89! She does this gratis as she thinks it is a very important measure to keeping well and able to stay in our own homes. Darlene has also volunteered to give us one class at a time suitable to both she and us. Nancy Summerfield is making plans for.Darlene's clinic. Two of our members have attended as patients and have benefitted greatly, and recommend it. Our club continues to promote Quota goals locally and as much as we are able, internationally. And we enjoy fellowship while we're doing it.
