Quota International of Orillia
Service Projects

Quota International of Orillia Inc. has a varied committee structure. Each committee deals with promoting, reviewing and presenting recommendations which they feel should be addressed by the club.

The Hearing and Speech Committee:
Over many years this committee has help promote hearing and speech month in the City of Orillia by having a one page ad placed in the local paper and having our flag raised at one of the local flag posts. They have helped monetarily with the Bob Rumball camp for the deaf, and the training of a Hearing Ear Dog. The have placed infra red hearing systems in the city council chambers and the opera house; placed “Hush-ups” in several school rooms and helped with auditory equipment for some classrooms. They have reviewed many requests from individuals and groups seeking assistance. As a result they have helped seniors and children get much needed hearing aids, and devices.  In the last year they helped 5 seniors get hearing aids and one child get new molds for his ears.  In the past they also promoted hearing testing for all kindergarten students in our area. This is now government funded.

Disadvantaged Women & Children:

Community Service Committee:
In the past we have promoted the Teddy Bear Program for traumatized children, with the local ambulance and fire departments, and financially helped the purchase of the infrared camera for the fire department. In 2009, we purchased more teddy bears for emergency services,

We have donated $35,000.00 to Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital to purchase a Sentinel Mode Biopsy Forcep which is used to help in the surgery for breast Cancer patients. We have also given the hospital money towards the purchase of diagnostic imaging equipment and redecorated and refurnished the ICU.

We have helped pave part of the Lightfoot Trail and placed a bench there honoring our past achievers.

In 2009 we have continued to support the local secondary schools by giving Community Service Awards to all 4 schools, and the Aileen Carter Award to Georgian College.

We gave to the annual Kiwanis Music Festival and placed a wreath at the Cenotaph for Remembrance Day. We supported the WIT Project and the Orillia Youth Center, and we purchased a sponsorship for the OFSAA Girls Hockey 2009 Tournament.

Last Christmas we supported the senior Light Tour, and shopped for 5 families and 20 seniors. We also supported and put in teams to the CNIB/Lions “Curl for Sight” Bonspiel and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bonspiel as well as the NSVCS/OPP Youth Volunteer Bowling Tournament.

World Service Committee
Over our many years the world service committee has participated in the following projects.

Though Quota International’s Club-to-Club program we help support 16 projects to aid the local clubs of other countries (where Quota has clubs) in their work with the deaf and hard of hearing and disadvantaged women and children. For more information on these projects check out the list on www.wesharefoundation.org

At each business meeting a container is passed around the table for donations of small change to be matched by the club and sent to C.A.R.E.

Used postage stamps are collected and are sent to the Guide dogs for the Blind to aid in the training of the dogs.

Besides these projects we have helped others do things for people in the 3rd world countries. We have helped young people go to places to help with humanitarian projects such as building housing and schools as well as teaching.

In the past we have been supporters of Sleeping Children Around the World; and though the Collin B Glasgow’s foundation we helped put a well in Africa for clean water, and helped with the cost of cataract surgery for children in the same area. We have also sent money to the Steven Lewis Foundation though Grandmothers for Grandmothers.

This past year (2008) we started a new project making boxes for the Good Samaritan Gift Box program.
