Quota International of Wainwright Events

The local Canadian Legion holds, as a fundraiser, a Steak Night every Friday night. Different clubs and groups in the Town, including our club, support the Legion by acting as waitresses at the Steak nights. Our members do this two or three times a year our latest was in January 2010.

Wainwright is proud of its town and one way this is shown is that a number of groups and organizations, including our club, do a clean up of the town. Normally this is done in May but in 2002 Quota led the way by doing a second cleanup in September.

Each month clubs and groups in Wainwright hold a birthday party for the seniors at the Battle River Lodge, and the Quota club does this once a year. We bring cakes and call bingo for the residents who always seem to enjoy the evening.

The Wainwright Quota Club is very active in raising money for local charities. We have for a number of years concentrated on two main fundraising events.

For many years we have held a Mother’s Day ring raffle. We are very grateful to our local jeweler who has supported us over the years by giving the ring to us at cost. This year we decided to try something different and on the 2nd May we held, what we hope will be the first of an annual “Ladies Night Out”. This year the title and theme was “Rock Stars and Glamour Queens”. We offered a catered dinner, entertainment ‘Name that Tune’ and a late lunch. We are still overwhelmed by the generosity and support of Ron, our favourite local jeweler, who has once more stepped up with the major prize of the evening a Polar Bear Diamond necklace.

As our intention was to give the ladies of Wainwright and the surrounding areas a wonderful night out, while still raising much needed dollar for the community we approached the masseurs, hairdressers and aestheticians for door prizes to present throughout the evening.
.
The night was an overwhelming success with all tickets sold. The majority of those who attended entered into the spirit of the evening , we had everyone from Diana Ross and the Supremes to Dolly Parton and our own ”Kissettes” who organized the decorations for the evening.

Not only did everyone enjoy the evening, clamouring for it to be an annual event, it was a huge financial success as we raised over $9,500.00 to donate to the Wainwright & District Health Foundation and the FCS services in Wainwright.

We all enjoyed it as much as our guests but have to admit there were some sore tired Quota ‘feet’ by the time the cleaning up was done and we could head home. We are already planning the theme for next year.

After the overwhelming success of the 2009 Ladies Night, the club decided to hold the event again. The tickets went on sale on a Saturday morning in early March and were sold out within an hour. For an added touch this year we gave those buying the tickets the option for an extra $5.00 to go into a draw for an upgrade to a “VIP” table. This captured everyone’s Imagination and nearly everyone went in for the draw.

The VIP table not only had a specially decorated central table but a limo to collect and drive them there with champagne en route. They were then served by their own four waitresses.

This year the theme was “Ladies Night at the Movies” more than 85% of those attending came in costume, many with the whole table as a movie theme. We had ‘Ghost Busters’; ‘Pirate of the Caribbean’; ‘Sister Act; ‘Slum Dog Millionaires’ ’27 Dresses’ and many more wonderful and imaginative costumes.

We outdid last year’s efforts by raising just over $10,000.00 on the night. A most enjoyable one and certainly one we have penciled in on the calendar again for next year.

From 1977 until 2006 the club has held an annual Charity Auction. It grew each year and in 2000 we had to move to a bigger venue as the event had become so popular. In 2006 this raised well over $12,000.00. However in 2007 the members agreed it was time for something of a change. In November we held, what was the first of a new annual event, a Christmas Dinner Dance for companies to bring their staff for a great night out. The event was extremely popular with both companies and individuals and tickets sold out almost as soon as they were printed largely being bought by local businesses for their staff Christmas party. Our members have enjoyed the evening and indeed held the event again in 2009. It was another overwhelming success and the decorating committee outdid even the previous years. We raised over $9,000.00 which will enable us to help many more worthy causes in our community.

With the monies raised from these two fundraisers we have over the year’s supported Camp Quality, a holiday camp for children with cancer, the Palliative Care Centre in our local hospital, the renovation of the Wainwright Public Library, and donated funds towards the purchase of equipment for the Fire Department. We have also funded sound sphere systems for two schools in Wainwright and donated money to help upgrade the playgrounds at both these schools. In 2007 we donated $6,000 to the Wainwright Museum to replace the existing washrooms. We also donated $2,000 to the Rotary Club of Wainwright to assist them in purchasing equipment for the Skate Board Park which they sponsor. We also help a number of ongoing local charities and individuals who have asked for our support including the Kinsmen’s Christmas Wish Foundation and the annual Cash for the Cure Banquet which raises money for Cancer Research.

Britteny is a local Wainwright girl with hearing problems and the club had supported her since she was in 5th Grade at the Elementary school. The latest cheque was to help Brittany with upgrades for a FM System as she is now away at college.
