Quota International of Wainwright
Service Projects

Over the years of service our club has supported many and various service projects in the community including supporting local individuals with hearing difficulties. The local schools and hospitals and the Kinsmen Christmas Wish, are just a few of the many projects we have helped and continue to help over the years.

In 2003 the club agreed to undertake a new service project. Wainwright was accepted for the Main Street Project in 2000 and in 2002 a group decided to partake in the Communities in Bloom Group. Our club supported this from the beginning, in 2002 we purchased a hanging basket for the main street, and we also helped plant baskets and barrels. In 2003 the club decided to undertaken a particular project, which we will fund, organize and follow up on as a club within the overall plan for the beautification of our town. For this we undertook to plant 2 flowerbeds in front of the Post Office, each spring members plant out the beds and maintain them through the summer. This year the Communities in Bloom have undertaken a large project in the main park for Wainwright and the club was happy to be able to help them.

One project which is near and dear to member’s hearts is Adrian Girard a young boy who suffers from a genetic disorder called Phenylketonuria (PKU) and who needs special phenylalanine-restricted foods.

The Quota club has been helping to support Adrian since he was three, ordering boxes, from the United States, of the special food that he can eat, on a regular basis.

The food has changed a lot over the years. The specially-prepared PKU foods is extremely expensive and the costs continue to grow each year. Adrian is an active boy that, through his specialized diet, is living a normal, healthy life but his family is always challenged in purchasing and preparing his food. As he grows his needs also increase and the club have recently agreed to allocate extra funds towards the purchase of the specialized foods Adrian requires. We hope that through our assistance, in some way we have lessened the burden for them.

This photo of Adrian taken recently shows how much he has grown and developed and makes us as a club feel proud that we have in some small way contributed to his reaching his potential as a normal young man.

We continue to support the local food bank with both donations of funds and the collection of food items from club members on a regular basis this last December some of our club members also volunteered in helping sort the food donated throughout the town and then also helped with making up the hampers. The Club donated 10 turkeys for the hampers and the food bank were able to make up over 100 hampers for those in need in our community.

In 2010 we decided to make the Food Bank our Quota Cares Month project.  The members split into 2 groups and we shopped at the 2 major stores in Wainwright buying for the food bank.  Members then took the groceries to the food bank, sorted it and stocked the shelves.

In Wainwright we believe our mandate is to help and support disadvantaged women and children in as many ways as possible. We support, on an ongoing basis the Lloydminster Interval Home and this year we have also chosen to support the Family and Community Support Services for their T.I.P.S. Program (Teaching Independent Parenting Skills).

For Quota Care Month 2009 the Wainwright Club chose as its project to help the Battle River Victim’s Assistance Society. We agreed to supply 15 Emergency Kits for Wainwright, Vermilion and Kitscoty.

We were fortunate to have a local store donate 12 of the backpacks we needed. Club members supplied some of the items to fill the packs and the club allocated a sum of $1,000.00 to complete the packs.

Each kit contains: Nightgown; socks; hand towel and face cloth; toiletries and personal items; a Journal; a paperback novel; a colouring and activity book and crayons; a Teddy Bear or soft Puppy and a $10.00 Tim Horton’s Gift card.

In addition an assortment of DVD’s were purchased to be shared by the Wainwright, Vermilion and Kitscoty detachments.

The club intends to continue to support this project and replace the kits as and when necessary.

This past year we were happy to be able to support what for us was a new cause. One of the local schools in Wainwright has a Breakfast for Learning Program and we helped fund this with a donation of $1,000.00.

Although District 11 has for many years had a Bursary Program in 2009 the Wainwright Club felt they would like to establish our own Bursary for local candidates. The response was very gratifying and as their were two very worthy candidates we felt that rather than choose between them we would give each a Bursary of $1,000.00.

This month we have undertaken to help one of the local schools put sound amplifation systems in their classrooms. We have started with one right away and will supply funds for a second for the new school in September 2010. Our hope is that we will be able to equip all the classrooms from K-6 with the systems.
